In my opinion as a TXDF Supervisor and NRA-certified instructor, I think the DPS needs to expand its categories to include rifle training and require more from their shotgun qualification of simply blasting off a shot to include actual shooting qualifications with the shotgun. As you know the NRA has a shotgun course a rifle course and instructor courses for each of these as well. They should adopt them as qualified and certified. Certifications and qualifications should occur for pistol, shotgun, and rifle separately. There are legitimate times where rifles are the better option for specific security jobs and there should be a way to accomplish that and keep that option viable.

We should never have our best options excluded with no way to resolve the real issue. Being qualified to use and handle that weapon “category” safely and effectively.
